The key terms of live entertainment and international production, explained clearly.
- Co-production
- Agreement by which several entities share the artistic and financial responsibility of a show, from creation to ongoing exploitation across territories.
- Lead production
- Mission by which a single company carries the full legal, artistic and financial responsibility of a show, either on its own account or on behalf of a third party.
- Distribution
- Set of operations that allow a show to be performed in partner venues: programming, touring, logistics and ticketing across countries and seasons.
- Licence
- Contractual transfer, to a local producer or venue, of the right to exploit a show in a defined territory for a defined duration of time.
- Fee
- Remuneration paid to an artist or team for a single performance or a defined exploitation period, distinct from royalties on box-office receipts.
- Stage management
- Technical coordination of a show during performance: sound, lighting, stage, video. Led by the production stage manager throughout the run.
- Tour
- Series of performances of the same show across several cities or countries, organised and coordinated by the lead production company.
- Royalties
- Fees paid to rights holders (authors, composers, publishers) in proportion to the revenue generated by the exploitation of the show worldwide.
- Co-presentation
- Agreement by which a venue and a producer share the revenues and costs of a performance, without a full transfer of financial risk involved.
- Technical approval
- Validation by the host venue of the technical specifications: stage layout, sound and lighting requirements, get-in and get-out logistics involved.
